Volume is the difference. NCPA put average prescription volume at 67,601 per independent store in 2024, up from 59,644 the year before. Chain counters run far higher. When a prescription needs a dose clarified or a prior authorization pushed, someone has to stop and make that call. Fewer scripts in the queue means it happens the same day rather than at the end of a shift.
What Happens When Pharmacies Close
Access is shrinking. NCPA counted 18,960 independent locations in July 2025, down from 18,984 a year earlier. The USC-NCPA Pharmacy Access Initiative found roughly 1 in 8 US neighborhoods now meet its definition of a pharmacy shortage area.
